Music by the LFHS Jazz Ensemble and the Don Stiernberg Trio:
Guitarist Andy Brown is known for his brilliance with all facets of guitar playing in this style-accompaniment, blazing solo lines, and his own unique chordal style. He is understandably Chicago's busiest and most highly regarded jazz guitarist. He can be found at all the clubs, either leading his own quartet, playing solo, or accompanying singers, most notably his wife, Petra Van Nuis. Originally from New York, Andy worked around Cincinnati for a time and has been firmly ensconced in Chicago almost two decades.
Jim Cox is everyone’s favorite bass player, with performance and recording credentials ranging from Earl Hines to Judy Roberts to Marian McPartland to Rosemary Clooney and countless others. He studied bass at the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana, where he also gained entre into the wider world of jazz. He is highly regarded especially for his versatility (Swing, Brazilian, Latin, etc)and uncanny ability to always provide the right “feel” and “vibe” for any number called.
All 3 of these musicians have performed together from Portland east to Portland west as well as overseas visits to festivals in Germany and Brazil. Their style might be described as swinging interpretations of accessible jazz material played acoustically on mandolin, guitar, and bass. Or in short, The Swingin'est pickin' string jazz trio you will meet!
